Drug eluting balloon – Cardiology MCQ – Answer

Correct answer: d) Paclitaxel

Currently paclitaxel is the sole drug used in drug eluting balloon. The combination of drug eluting balloon with bare metal stent implantation has been shown to be inferior to drug eluting stents (DEB-AMI Trial). But drug eluting balloons are thought to have a role in small vessels for which stents are not suitable and in the treatment of instent restenosis where adding additional metal to the previously stented segment can be avoided. But as of date new generation drug eluting stents are quite good for treatment of instent restenosis.
