Arterial embolectomy – Cardiology MCQ – Answer

Correct answer: c) Fogarty catheter

Cournand catheter is an end holed catheter used for right heart studies. Cobra catheter with tip shaped like a cobra hood is used for renal angiography. Micro catheters are used for entering small distal vessels and are introduced through a standard catheter.

Fogarty catheter used for peripheral arterial embolectomy is introduced antegradely across the embolus, the distal balloon inflated and the catheter withdrawn to bring out the thrombus, usually through an arteriotomy. Conventionally, general surgeons have been doing arterial embolectomy, often in the femoral and popliteal arteries.
